Part Six of the Finding Joy in Jail series, Paul’s letter to the Philippians.

Sermon Text: Philippians 3:1-15

Most of us think the way to win God’s favor is to do good things. If I read my Bible, go to church, share the gospel, go on mission trips, and pray, then God will be happy with me. Paul calls people who measure their status by their performance dogs. I was a dog at least until I was 18. Are you?

Jesus didn’t die on the cross so we could waste our lives trying to earn points with God. Faith is the key that unlocks all of God’s favor. If we have faith in Christ, we have the righteousness of Christ! Guilt-driven, merit-based religion goes out the window, and the door is opened for love-driven, joy-based relationship.

Citywide Blitz Saturday, March 27

Let me invite you to participate in our second neighborhood Blitz on Saturday, March 27. In our first effort last month, 101 people joined us for a couple of hours to invite our neighbors to worship with us. Over 900 homes were contacted on that first date and we hope to duplicate it on Saturday, the 27^th. Our goal is to knock on every door in Clinton in 3 years. We are off to a great start!

Our second Blitz will be Saturday, March 27th at 9:30 a.m. in the Student Building. We need 100 volunteers again! You do not need to know how to share your faith to participate. If you would like to sign up, please contact Mary Sanders at 601-925-6439.

Youth assistant needed at Iglesia Hispana de Clinton.

Iglesia Hispana de Clinton is the Spanish-speaking church plant sponsored by Morrison Heights Baptist Church. Brother Cosme Arana and his son Andrew are looking for a volunteer to help lead the youth group. Spanish required. Email Cosme if you’re interested.

We need 2 guys and a truck Saturday.

A church member needs help moving 3 appliances, and one bedroom set, and a few boxes. The little stuff has already been moved, they just need a couple of strong backs for the big stuff. We have a trailer. If you can help, call Judy Forster at 601.214.1026.

Even if you don’t have your next mission trip on the calendar, this is a good way to put some money away so you can jump onboard next time God gives you a mission opportunity. Signs of Christian Progress in China

Check out the China Daily News story of a Beijing student who converted to Christianity when he failed to find meaning in his successful university life.

Jon Bloom at Desiring God points out four reasons why this article should make your jaw drop:

The official and highly controlled newspaper of the Communist government is featuring a story of a religious conversion of an exceptionally bright university student who found meaninglessness in existence apart from God.
He was given a Bible by a colleague, and the reader is not led to believe this is a bad thing.
He converted to Christ after reading it and now is experiencing fulfillment.
And he’s now happily attending an unregistered church (i.e house church).

Peru Paper at the Oscars

Many of you remember Grace Bateman. She came to Kaleo on a Sunday morning and told us about her work with Peru Paper Company. Grace started Peru Paper Company in 2005 to give Peruvian women a fair employment opportunity making hand-made greeting cards to be sold in the U.S.

Things have picked up for PPC. Peru Paper greeting cards actually made it into twenty-five “swag bags” at the Academy Awards! (Those are the gift bags that the stars find in their rooms.) So Oprah, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges, Morgan Freeman, and 21 other stars found a PPC greeting card in their swag bags!

Earn Mission Trip Cash at the Garage Sale

The annual Morrison Heights missions garage sale is Friday, April 10-11, 2010.

Three ways the garage sale will help you out:

You might find a cheap couch.
You can donate that old toaster to a good cause.
You can earn lots of cash for your next mission trip!

Even if you don’t have your next mission trip on the calendar, this is a good way to put some money away so you can jump onboard next time God gives you a mission opportunity.

All the garage sale proceeds will be divided between volunteers. The more hours your put in, the bigger your share of the money. You can work any or all of the following days:

Saturday, March 13 from 8:00 a.m. to noon (20 person max)
Saturday, March 20 from 8:00 a.m. to noon (20 person max)
Saturday, April 3 from 8:00 a.m. to noon (20 person max)
Wednesday, April 7 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Thursday, April 8 from 8:00 a.m. until finished
Friday, April 9 from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

How to Ask Stimulating Discussion Questions

Jesus wasn’t just a preacher. He was also a small-group leader. He knew the power of a good question. And he knew how to get people talking.

Preaching is important. But the reason we have small groups is so we can learn and apply the Bible together. That’s impossible without discussion. And the key to good discussion is preparing good questions.

Preparing the right questions before you start the meeting can give you assurance that the discussion will be lively and dynamic. Closed questions have only one correct answer. When a leader uses too many of them, he positions himself as a Bible expert who’s trying to discover the brightest, most biblically literate students.
